Dockside Aparthotel

Bathrooms

The main bathrooms are large and spacious, with the bath having been replaced for the double shower.

We do have to have a conversation about the en-suite, however.

Off the main bedroom is a small, tiled cupboard which I believe has been decreed to be a wet room. It houses a sink, toilet and overhead shower, although I haven’t yet worked out how to use the shower without drenching the entire room; toiletries, towels and washbags included. If you’ver even wondered what it might be like to shower and use the toilet simultaneously, then this is probably the room for you.

Oh… AND DID I MENTION IT HAS NO DOOR? Or curtain. Nothing.

Enjoy that.

The View

All the rooms have gorgeous views over the wharf and up towards the imposing and impressive cathedral. The higher the floor, the better the view, so ask if you can have a high one because it’s worth it.

There is also the view of the Radio City Tower, which is my favourite Liverpool landmark as it looks like something right out of The Jetsons.

Room Type: Two-Bed Apartment

Location & Parking

The location of the hotel is not far from the Pullman Hotel, except that this building faces the wharf rather than the river. It’s still quite a walk to the city centre, past Albert Dock and the tourist-y bits and bobs and across the widest road imaginable.

Rating for hotel location: 2/5 (too far out for me)

Room Types

As this is an aparthotel, all rooms come with a fitted kitchen. There is a mix of one-bed and two-bed apartments, with a large bathroom and en-suite if it’s a two-bed. On the ground floor are rooms that can house more guests - they seem to have three or four beds in one large room and then a seating and kitchen area upstairs (think Love Island without the heat or gym-bunnies). They put us in one of these rooms the first time we stayed, but I felt a bit vulnerable sleeping on the ground floor, and they moved us straightaway.

Work Space & Wifi

The rooms have not been designed for business travellers. You can work at the dining table (large in a two-bed, or a pitifully small round, glass table in the one-bed), or choose one of the dressing tables in the bedrooms, which may or may not be near a plug socket. Working from the dining table will also mean stretching out your charger across the room to the nearest kitchen plug socket.

The wifi on our first couple of visits was great, but our last visit placed us in the corner room on floor 2. The wifi was awful, unusable for Paul to work from the room. The terrible signal was thought to be interference from the arena, so if you need reliable wifif, don’t opt for one of the more spacious corner rooms.

Things We Loved

The customer service here is really excellent. Any issues have been resolved immediately, and they are more than happy to accommodate room choice if they have availability.

The view is also to die for, and the street outside is quiet - we experienced no disruption from any kind of noise, unlike when you’re in the city centre.

Dockside is close to Albert Dock which I like to potter around on my lunch break.

Will We Return?

The wifi incident was unfortunate in our last stay, which has made us hesitant. For me, it’s just a little too far from the hustle and bustle of the city. We do, however, sometimes have our children with us during the school holidays, and Dockside makes a good base for that. There is a McDonald’s across the wharf that is visible from the apartments, so they can be sent off on their own when teenage tummies rumble, and you can see them all the time.

So yes, we may be back. But not necessarily for work.

Cost of Parking

Parking is at Kings Dock again, despite there being loads of parking spaces right outside the hotel. (I checked - we aren’t allowed to use them.) The rate is discounted again if you tell them in the car park office where you stayed before you use the machines. Reception will give you a little bit of paper to ‘prove’ it.

Rates: £28.20 per 24 hours.

Room Storage

Well. We have wardrobes and a dressing table in each room with a little drawer that will definitely house knickers in a pinch. Plenty of storage and hangind space should you wish to unpack.

Food & Drink

There is a small cafe area in reception. This serves coffee and homemade cakes as well as housing a pizza oven. If you don’t fancy going out to Pizza Express (that’s just around the corner) then you can try a margarita or pepperoni pizza from reception. I’ll let you decide which you think is the best option.

Hmm…

The wifi being unstable and no clear workspace is problematic.

Oh... and the TV is TINY. And so far up the wall you feel like you’re craning your neck to see it.
