Bathrooms

Dark and a little dated, but clean and plenty of space. Sinks are (oddly) quite low, and there isn’t anywhere on the sink for your toothbrush. There are glass shelves you can use if you evict the towels.

Oh... and they have a bath!

The View

Our first room overlooked another hotel across the street, so we had quite a clear view of their goings-on (it seemed to be the EasyJet hotel). It wasn’t great, to be honest, especially with people getting changed and not realising we were there.

The corner room overlooks a monument to Queen Victoria in a square. It has a few ugly buildings around it, but the lights are pretty at night. The other window overlooks an old building that doesn’t seem to have much going on, so it feels private if you want to leave the curtains open.

Location & Parking

Location is absolutely brilliant. 5 mins from the docks and five mins into the centre of the shopping district. It is also on a pedestrianised road that has lots of bars, cafes and restaurants, making it feel very continental (when the weather is okay!). Castle Street is bustling and lovely, but not so much so that it runs into the evenings and sleep is an issue.

I honestly can’t fault where it’s situated… however… the car park feels an age away, and it’s the reason I bought a festival trolley rather than carrying my bags.

Room Types

We have booked a King Suite every time we have stayed because we didn’t want to risk getting anything different! The room is huge, with an enormous comfy bed (I could probably sleep sideways) and a spacious bathroom (with a bath).

We have asked for the corner room a couple of times as it has floor-to-ceiling windows, making it light and bright. Some of the other rooms feel a bit dark, but in winter they would definitely become ‘cozy’.

The other room options are there on the website, but I wouldn’t want to risk giving up the corner room!

Warning though: rooms have a step in them, usually down from the bed area to the ‘living’ space. I would imagine many an inebriated customer has come a cropper on those steps. Take care, my friend.

Work Space & Wifi

The room has a good-sized desk with plug sockets; however, the large mirror above the desk means you are constantly staring at yourself. The mirror can be lit via a magic button, so the workspace is bright and well-lit. The bar downstairs works well as somewhere to take a laptop, but there is no designated co-workspace.

Things We Loved

The proximity to town and its location on Castle Street. The vibe is great, and the lively atmosphere is nice. If you were travelling alone, you definitely wouldn’t feel alone!

The size of the room is amazing for the price, and the bed is sooooo comfy. All is spotless and clean.

Staff are lovely, too, and recognise us when we go back, which is nice.

Will We Return?

We will definitely be back. Location (close to Paul’s office on the docks) is a key factor, even if it means a ten-minute walk with my trolley. I like being close to the city centre as I’ve found a few places that make great working spots… more to follow!

Cost of Parking

Parking is at Moorfields NCP car park, right next to Moorfields station.

Rates: £24 per 24 hours.

I believe that you can get a discount from the hotel, but reception shuts for a couple of hours in the day, so if you have a late checkout, you may not get your parking discount as there is no one there.

Room Storage

Shelves! We have shelves! But still no drawers…

WHY DO HOTELS HATE DRAWERS?

Food & Drink

There is a breakfast offering served in the bar area of the hotel. I love the bar area - it’s not huge, but it feels lush and trendy. (Just like me!) The bar is open at certain times, but the receptionist was more than happy to serve me a glass of wine outside of these hours.

In terms of other offerings, there is every style of food imaginable on your doorstep. I recommend the Thai place - it’s great, as are the staff.

Hmm…

The bedside tables and lamps are firmly attached to the wall - makes you feel a little like you’re in a room that has a lot of parties, although there has never been any noise. Who is the usual clientele that means people can’t have access to lamp plugs?!

The hotel is also next to quite a busy bar and pub, and whilst the noise wasn’t too bad, the noise of the bottle bins being emptied in the morning was DEFINITELY an issue.
